UD-Tape at 0.15 mm: where every Li:ma part begins

Continuous glass fibre, fully wet-out in thermoplastic resin, controlled to a tenth of a millimetre. Inside the impregnation line that turns rovings into 240 MPa structural tape, and keeps it 100% recyclable.

Every Li:ma structural part (battery cover, underbody shield, FEM carrier) starts as a ribbon of continuous glass fibre thinner than a human hair is wide: UD-Tape, 0.15 mm of fibre and thermoplastic resin in perfect suspension.

Impregnation is everything

The difference between a laminate and a pile of fibre is wet-out. On our in-house impregnation line, continuous rovings are drawn through a resin bath and heated die until every filament is fully encapsulated in thermoplastic matrix. Fibre dispersion is held uniform across the entire width. That is the property that decides whether 240 MPa on the datasheet becomes 240 MPa in the part.

That consistency is what lets the same impregnation backbone feed our EP interior-trim line, in production since 2021.

Cross-ply engineering

A single ply is strong in one direction. Parts live in every direction. Li:ma laminates stack UD plies at engineered angles (0°, +45°, −45°, 90°) around honeycomb cores, tuning weight-per-part through layup design rather than brute thickness. The result: −45% weight versus the steel incumbent, at one-shot sizes up to 1.5 m².

A thermoplastic matrix means the strongest part in the car can also be the one that comes back as pellets, not landfill.

Unlike thermoset composites, which cure forever and can never be reshaped, thermoplastic tape re-melts. Off-cuts, end-of-life panels, and process scrap all return to the material stream. Full performance, fully recyclable: that is the point of the material choice, not a side effect.
